Jake Toth is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and composer based in Denver, Colorado. Originally from New York’s Hudson Valley, Toth blends American Primitive guitar traditions with ambient field recordings and minimalist compositions to create music that is emotionally resonant, sonically rich, and deeply rooted in a sense of place.
His debut album, Wallkill River Blues, has received widespread critical acclaim. Westword named it one of the Best New Releases from Colorado Musicians, while The Chronogram praised the album as “reminiscent of John Fahey, Jack Rose, and Robbie Basho,” calling it a “sonically dextrous” work that “swirls with melodic abandon and harmony synchronous with the flow of water in nature.” The record is steeped in atmosphere, with sound recordings—like the subtle chirping of crickets—bridging tracks and adding to its immersive quality. Toth’s intricate fingerstyle guitar work and use of natural textures create “an auditory depth and emotional vulnerability that is accessible and absorbing.”
Following its success, Toth returns with The Phoenicia Tapes, a stripped-down folk EP recorded live in a cabin in Phoenicia, NY, on the night before trout season. With only vocals, guitar, and the ambient sound of rain on a tin roof, the EP showcases his storytelling. The first track, “Wallkill”, reflects on his hometown with bittersweet honesty, while “Mary” is an abstract meditation on longing. The EP serves as a thank-you to listeners, offering an intimate glimpse into Toth’s songwriting.
Through both instrumental and lyrical compositions, Toth continues to explore solitude, nostalgia, and place—crafting music that resonates with raw beauty.
